Current skincare routine

After many years of trail and error I feel like I’ve finally found skin care ingredients and products that work really well for me and have taking my skin from cystic acne hell to clear smooth and sometimes even glowly 😉. You could say am pretty happy with how my skin is looking in my *coughs* late 30’s.

Of course I still have some issues, like my scarring that bugs me at times and I am just starting to see more darkness under my eyes. There are small lines when I smile but lets be honest I can’t stop the ageing clock. I can however try and keep my skin looking as good as it can be.

Since I stopped using products with controversial (or skin nasties as I call them) ingredients my acne has been gone for over 4-5years. I still get the odd hormonal blemish but its nothing compared with what I was dealing with.

Two main culprits for me where mineral oil and SLS (see my post on this ingredient here)

I also learnt a lot by reading up on good ingredients and added these into my routine these are:

  • Vitamins A (Retinol) – Tackles ageing and  blemishes
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)  – Regulates oil production, reduces blotchiness, protects skin against heat from infrared, UV and visible light.
  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) – Tackles dullness and hyperpigmention
  • Vitamin E – Tackles redness and scarring helps sooth skin.
  • Skin friendly acids AHA, BHA and PHA  –  Tackles blemishes, dry skin, dullness helps with cell turnover.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – Tackles lack of water in the skin boosts hydration.

My current routine is:

AM – cleanse – acid tone – spritz toner/essence – serum – moisturiser

PM – remove makeup – cleanse – acid toner – mask (once a week) – spritz/essence – serum – facial oil – moisturiser/sleeping mask

The type of products and ingredients stay the same but the brands change. Sticking to this routine has cleared my acne and improved my skins clarity and smoothness.

Here’s an example of my current morning routine with some favourite products:

Morning Skincare Routine from left to right; Farmacy Green Clean; Kat Burki PH Essence; Eucerin Acid toning lotion; Clinique Moisture Surge Concentrate; iUNIK serum; Zelens Balancing Moisturiser

In the evening I swap out the serum for either a retinol or stronger acid based one and finish with a facial oil or thicker cream moisturiser.

I’ll use a mask maybe once a week when my skin needs it I’ve not found one a can’t live without yet but I do like Origins and Sisley ones.

I also like to use a physical scrub every now and then when my skin is  feeling a little lumpy or particularly oily. I really like the Doctor Scrub by Goldfaden MD (cultbeauty £65 for 100ml)  it is pretty strong and gritty but used gentle it leaves my skin super soft and glowly.

If I get  a hormonal chin spot ( little buggers!) I’ll apply my trusty Votary Blemish Rescue Oil  (spaceNK 335 for 15ml) directly to any spots after toning till it disappears. I’ll also use the Votary Clarifying Oil (spaceNK  £45 for 100ml) as my cleanser. This seems to work and the blemish will be gone with 4-5 days without causing too much bother.

Sticking to a good routine is a great way to keep your skin looking as good as it an be and tackle your skin concerns along the way.
